Chapter Fourteen

Watching every aspect of Louisa and James’s marital life isn’t easy for Wagadhaany. Nor is it remotely interesting. For the most part she doesn’t want to witness their romantic moments, and she is uncomfortable when she hears their arguing. But there she is, with an intimate view of their daily lives, often with nowhere to turn or hide.

‘I worry about you when I’m away,’ James says to Lousia one evening. ‘But business is business and I need to be there when the cattle arrive into Victoria.’ He looks out towards the horizon as if he is pondering life’s mysteries. ‘They should be nice and fat for sale after grazing the lush lands of the Riverina.’ He turns back to his wife. ‘I will also meet with another businessman there, about backing me in my desire to be mayor. And David will be there, making sure our financial stability is known by all the right people.’

He pulls his wife in close as if the thought of power and money will make him more sexually attractive to her. Louisa smiles and giggles like a schoolgirl, and Wagadhaany rolls her eyes at how lovesick Louisa can be at times.
